Hey, lovely mamas and soon-to-be-mamas! 🌸 Today, I’m thrilled to dive into a topic that many find a bit mystifying: lotus birth! As a full-spectrum plant-based holistic doula, I'm all about safe, natural, and effective practices when it comes to birth, pregnancy, and womb health. So, if you’re curious about this beautiful tradition, you’re in the right place!

What is Lotus Birth?

First things first, let’s clear up the confusion between lotus birth and delayed cord clamping. While both practices focus on the umbilical cord and placenta, they’re quite different. Lotus birth is a lovely, spiritual tradition where your precious little one stays connected to the placenta and cord until it naturally falls off—no clamping or cutting! This can take anywhere from six to ten days, so yes, be prepared to carry around that placenta with your bundle of joy!

It’s totally a labor of love (pun intended!). I tried lotus birth with one of my kids, and while it can be a bit tedious, I found it to be a truly beautiful experience. Just keep in mind that it requires some extra care—think of it like having a little buddy attached to your baby!

The Care Routine

So, how does it work? You’ll want to give that placenta some TLC to keep it healthy and happy. Here are a few tips:

Air it out: Let the placenta breathe! Keeping it dry helps prevent any funky smells or stickiness.

Daily salt: Many parents choose to salt the placenta daily and keep it clean, ensuring it stays safe and fresh.

Use distilled water: When washing it, stick to distilled water—nothing but pure hydration!

It’s a commitment for sure, and if you’re planning to be out and about, it’s probably best to stick with delayed cord clamping instead.

The Beauty of the Placenta

Now, let’s chat about what you can do with that placenta after the birth! 🌟 Many families choose to encapsulate it, which is a way of turning it into supplements to help replenish nutrients after birth. Just think of it as a little nutritional boost, since that amazing organ nourished your baby for nine months!

Some folks even like to keep a piece of it as a keepsake or do a spiritual practice—like planting it in a special place or creating a beautiful print. The possibilities are endless!

Why Choose Lotus Birth?

In our fast-paced society, we often don’t have the space to truly savor these moments. If you feel ready to embrace this practice and have some time to dedicate to it, lotus birth can be a beautiful option. Just remember, if you’re feeling overwhelmed or think it might be too much, delayed cord clamping is a perfectly wonderful choice too!

So, mamas, as you prepare for this magical journey of motherhood, consider all your options and choose what feels right for you and your family. If you have any questions or topics you’d love me to explore, don’t hesitate to reach out at info@mylotusbaby.com
